Il
paese sorge, probabilmente, laddove, in età romana, era
una villa rustica, con annesso latifondo, che, dal nome del proprietario
Serenius, si chiamò " fundus Serenianus", dal
toponimo derivò l'attuale nome del sito. Il primo nucleo
abitato sorse intorno al sec. XII come casale di Avella, della
cui baronia fece parte sino agli inizi del 1800. Nel suo territorio
è, inoltre, attestata, a partire dal 1593 la presenza di
una vasta proprietà terriera, posseduta nel tempo da diverse
famiglie, fino a quella dei marchesi Caravita, che nel 1815 ereditarono
il titolo di " Principi di Sirignano", pur non essendo,
in effetti, i diretti proprietari del feudo. Solo alla fine del
secolo scorso il senatore Giuseppe Caravita riacquistò
l'intera proprietà, ricostruendo l'antico palazzo patrizio,
divenuto, poi, sontuoso luogo di ritrovo dell'artistocrazia partenopea,
oltre che di artisti e letterati.

historical outline
The
small town probably rises where, during the Roman Age, there was
a country house, with a latifundium attached which, from the owner's
name Serenius, was named '' fundus Serenianus '', toponym from
which the term Sirignano has derived. The first housing-centre
took shape around the XII century as hamlet of Avella and it was
part of its barony until the beginning of 1800. In it 's land
is also attested, since 1593, the presence of a vast landed property,
owned by many families in the years, until that of the marcheses
Caravita who, in 1815, inherited the title of " Princes of
Sirigniano ", even though they weren't the direct owners
of the feud. Only in the end of the last century the senator Giuseppe
Caravita bought back the whole property, rebuilding the ancient
patrician palace and making it a sumptuous meeting place for the
Parthenopean aristocracy and for the best names in the arts and
in the culture.
