Incerte sono sia le origini che l'etimologia
del nome. Secondo alcuni Baiano deriverebbe
da un " Praedium Vallejanum, oppure da
un " Praedium Badianum. Probabile che
il suo nome sia originario dei Valleo, nobile
famiglia " abellana" in età
romana. Fu conquistata da Silla nella Guerra
Sociale e fu assegnata all 47' Legione. Fu
saccheggiata da Spartaco nel 79 a.C., mentre
nella divisione amministrativa fatta da Ottaviano
Augusto, Baiano fu assegnata alla tribù
Galeria. Soggetta alle incursioni barbariche,
fu occupata prima dai bizantini, e poi dai
longobardi del Ducato di Benevento, per poi
seguire le sorti di Napoli durante la dominazione
degli Svevi. Fu feudo dei Janvilla, dei Caracciolo,
degli Orsini, dei Mastrilli, dei Doria. In
seguito divenne capoluogo del mandamento e
fu aggregata alla Provincia di Avellino. Famosa
è la Festa
del Majo.

its name. According to someone Baiano should
-- derive from a '' Praedium Vallejanum ''
or from a ''Praedium Badianum ''. Probably
its name orisinally cames from the Valleus,
a noble family of Avella in the Roman Age.
It was conquered by Silla in the Social War
and it was assigned to the 47th Legion.It
was sacked by Spartacus in 79 B.C., while
in the administrative division made by Ottaviano
Augusto, Baiano was assigned to the tribe
Galeria. Subject to many barbaric incursions,
it was first occupied by the Byzantines, then
by the Longobards of the Dukedom of Benevento,
and after it followed Naples' fate during
the Svevians' rule. It was feud of the Janvillas,
the Caraccioloes ,the Orsinis, the Mastrillis,
the Dorias. After it became the administrative
centre of the district and it was associated
to the province of Avellino. Famous is the
Festa del Majo.
